The Strength and Frailty of Life

We all lose patience every now and then.  Today, I lost mine while standing at the checkout line.  It was taking too long for the cashier to scan the clementines.  I tried my best to remain calm but I could feel my blood pressure rising with every second.

An older lady, about 80/85 years old, pulled her cart into the checkout behind me.  She asked if I could help her lift her two 5 lb. bags of potatoes onto the conveyor belt.

Her cane hanging from the cart was covered in decorative tape, probably done by a grand-daughter.  She was dressed in stylish old lady clothes, with pearls and pearl earrings.  Her body was frail, her hands were withered with age and her voice soft.  Yet, she projected inner strength.  How many of us will be as lucky as this woman is?  Lucky to have the ability to do things on her own at her age.

Her daughter arrived as I put the last bag on the conveyor belt and thanked me for helping.

That small distraction gave the cashier time to sort out the issue with the clementines.  My impatience left and in it's place was the thought of the miracle that we all carry within us.

The strength and frailty of life.
